Camels are large, hoofed   mammals best known for their ability to survive in some of the harshest environments on Earth. They have distinctive humps on their backs that store fat, which the body can convert into water and energy when food is scarce. Their long eyelashes, closable nostrils, and thick lips help them endure blowing sand and eat tough, thorny plants found in deserts. Because of these unique adaptations, camels are often called the “ships of the desert.”
